“The goal of spiritual warfare and spiritual mapping is to clear the path so that Jesus and Jesus alone will be ‘lifted up’ such that He will ‘draw all men’ to Himself.” (Jn. 12:32 and Lk. 3:4-6) – Joe Ozawa.

Our focus must always be on Jesus (Heb. 12:2). Church-planting, evangelism, signs and wonders, battling spirits, or many other things we can devote ourselves to in the name of Jesus may be important. However, devotion to Christ and obedience to Him is primary. This is especially important as we talk about spiritual mapping where our focus can easily become the evil one.

Spiritual mapping is an important way to find the enemy’s strongholds in a city or among a people. There are three major ways to gather this data to prepare for strategic praying:

1.  Historical Research

bullet

Were there any battles fought in this area?

bullet

Other kinds of bloodshed? Death? Murders? Crimes?

bullet

Dishonest acts by businesses, politicians, others?

bullet

Prejudices? Slavery?

bullet

How and when was the city established? (Any sacrifices done? Dedications to spirits? Was the city won in a war? )

bullet

Any “sacred” or treasured points in the city? Why are they sacred? Where do people go for power?

bullet

Any special symbols in the city? What do they mean? Flags? Crests? Symbols on money?

bullet

Any other significant points in history?

bullet

Who are the heads of government presently? Heads of schools? Pray for them daily.

bullet

What kinds of names are in the city? What do they mean?

bullet

Are there any statues?

bullet

Superstitions? How did those superstitions come about?

bullet

Any local art that might tell a piece of history or an attitude of the heart?

bullet

What is the prevailing religion of these people? How did it enter this area?

bullet

What pacts or covenants have been made?

bullet

Natural disasters, such as famine, floods, locust infestation, etc.?

bullet

Prevalent illnesses, diseases, or deformities?

Ask locals, both Christians and non-Christians what their feelings are about the area they live or the people group they are.

2.  Observation: Walking the Land

bullet

Any areas of poverty?

bullet

Crime areas? Specifically, what crimes?

bullet

Prostitution? Pornography? Homosexuality?

bullet

Where are the businesses and what kinds of businesses are they?

bullet

Are there any masonic temples? Other cultic gatherings? Where are they?

bullet

Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic temples or other religious gathering places?

bullet

Schools?

bullet

Government offices?

bullet

Christian churches?

bullet

As you walk, are there any places where you feel depressed or have difficulty in praying?

bullet

Are there particular areas in the city where no one is coming to Christ?

bullet

Are there areas of town with no churches or dying churches?

bullet

Are there gates to the city? Ask God to show you how He wants to be proclaimed in the gates of the city and in the heart gates of each person.

bullet

Seek out high points, such as on top of a mountain or a building. These are excellent places to pray and proclaim God’s word over the city.

bullet

Are there any idols, poles, altars, sacred stones?

3.  Divine Revelation

bullet

What is God telling you to pray for?

bullet

Are there scriptures He is giving you related to that city or people that you can proclaim?

bullet

What promises is He giving you through His word, His voice, or signs along the path?

bullet

Is God asking you to do some type of prophetic action?

bullet

Ask God, what is the one thing blocking these people from coming to Christ?

bullet

Is there repentence needed for the sins of the forefathers of this city or people? (Ex. 34:7)

bullet

Are there places in the city that feel particularly dark or oppressive when you go there?

bullet

Ask God to give you a vision of how He desires that city or people to be. Then seek out prophetic acts you can do that counteract the evil that is in opposition to that vision (such as feeding the hungry, housing the homeless, sharing Christ’s love in the red light district, planting roses in an area where there has been much bloodshed, or whatever else He leads you to do).

Five pressure points you might want to seek out in the area you are prayerwalking:

bullet

Government centers where legislation is made

bullet

Commercial centers where decisions are made for who gets what goods

bullet

Educational centers, especially the president’s office and teachers

bullet

Communication centers, such as for media, TV, radio

bullet

Spiritual centers, both Christian and non-Christian
