We find as we prayerwalk that a key ingredient is hearing the voice of the Lord. After all, we are seeking to cooperate with God to pray His desires over an area. We know many of His desires from the Bible, and He will never contradict His Word. However, in prayerwalking we see three specific ways that God gives us insight into what He wants to do.

Observation Such as seeing garbage on the streets triggering you to pray against the refuse in people’s lives

ResearchThe Spirit takes information uncovered through research which directs and empowers your praying. For example, you might find in researching your city pockets of persistent crime, injustice, or occult practices that directs you to certain areas and gives you a clear direction for prayer.

Revelation This form of insight could be from a dream, a vision, or just a nudging from God's Spirit.  You may have no tangible reason for your insight, but God has spoken to you and you act on it. When God gives you such insight, if you’re not sure of it, confirm it through the Word, and then act on it.

Activities Common to Prayerwalking

  1. Praise -- Praise gives glory to Christ and exalts Him to His proper place as Lord of all. The Lord inhabits the praises of His people. God’s presence fills the area when we praise, and the demons flee.  In Ps. 100, praise is like the entrance into His very presence.

  2. Prayer -- In Rev. 8, there was silence in heaven for the coming up of the prayers of the saints.  Eph. 6:18 suggests our main weapon against the enemy is to “pray without ceasing.” God can do anything He wants without our help. But He chooses to use the prayers of Christians as the vessel for releasing His power and bringing about victory in the spiritual realm.

Prayer Evangelism  - involves visiting your neighbors to ask what you can pray for. Often through God answering prayer, a person's heart is opened to hear His truth.

  1.  Prophetic action -- See Ezekiel 37 and  Joshua 6 for  God-led actions that open the way for His victory.

For Example:

bullet

He may lead you to anoint the land with oil and say,"In the name of Jesus I claim this land for Christ."

bullet

Or you might write His name on the bottom of your shoes to symbolize claiming every place your feet walk. (Deut. 11:24)

bullet

In countries where you are not allowed to say the name of Jesus out loud, you might write scriptures on rocks and sticks and bury them in the ground.

bullet

In a city with many beggars, you can hand out food to them as you bless them in Jesus’ name.

bullet

God might lead you to walk around a particular building seven times, or to blow a trumpet somewhere. (Josh. 6)

  1. Warfare

Even though He has given us weapons with which to fight, the battle is not ours, it is the Lord’s (II Chron. 20, Josh. 5-6)

 Other Important Elements of Prayerwalking:

bullet

Prayer covering   (Especially when praying overseas among an unreached people, it is wise to have at least five intercessors per prayerwalker)

bullet

Unity (Jn. 22-23)

bullet

Decide upon a leader.

bullet

Know each others' particular gifts and how God speaks to each.

bullet

Decide upon specific scriptures the team will study together in preparation for the prayerwalk.

bullet

Do a study together such as "The Mind of Christ" in preparation for the trip.

bullet

Submission to authority – both within the team and with local pastoral authority

bullet

Submission to the Lord

bullet

Humility and obedience

bullet

Objectivity and boldness (Josh. 1:6)

bullet

Persistence

bullet

Prayer journal (recording what God tells you in your quiet times leading up to and during the prayerwalk, especially as He leads you to particular scriptures as promises for that people)

Five pressure points you might want to seek out in the area you are prayerwalking:

  1. Government centers where legislation is made

  2. Commercial centers where decisions are made for who gets what goods

  3. Educational centers, especially the president’s office and teachers

  4. Communication centers, such as for media, TV, radio

  5. Spiritual centers, both Christian and non-Christian
